He barely even remembered how he had gotten here. The village children and Rusl, all of which had convinced him out on a walk through the Faron Woods, surrounded him as they traveled along the familiar paths. He followed along quietly, his feet mechanically moving forward across the firm dirt path. His gaze wandered from the early-morning sky to the trees that glistened like emeralds in the bright sunlight. The shrills of cicadas and chirps of birds rang through his ears along with the occasional laughs of the children when a rabbit or a squirrel ran by. He felt a smile curl across his lips; he had missed moments like this while he was out fighting evil and being here again made his entire journey worthwhile. He let the warmth of the air and joy in his heart wash over him, almost completely forgetting about the rest of the world.
The sudden snap of a nearby twig brought him back to reality. He automatically felt himself set into the hero again, coming to an immediate halt as he turned in the direction of the crunch. He became aware of a slow footfall, a steady breathing pattern, and a pair of golden eyes staring back at him.
"Link?" came Rusl's voice from behind him. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah," Link said after a brief pause. "You take the kids ahead. I want to check something out."
Rusl nodded, continuing on his way with the children close behind him. Link turned his head back after watching the group vanish into the forest, hearing the footfall darting away from him. He quickly followed through the steadily thicker underbrush of the forest, his mind racing. I wonder where this thing is going. Whatever it may be, I'll have to think of a quick way to take it down. If only I had my sword…no matter, I can make due without…
Before Link even realized it, he had come to a stop in a nearby clearing. All was silent here save for the rustle of the wind blowing through the trees above. He found himself hunched in a defensive stance, his eyes darting back and forth over the surroundings as he paced around in a small circle.
"Alright!" his voice echoed through the clearing. "I know you're out here somewhere, so just come on out!"
He waited. He received no reply. He suddenly felt a sharp pain jolt through his shoulder and his body hit the ground beneath him. He spun onto his back after grabbing his attacker. Claws scratched his neck and face violently as it squirmed loose from his grasp. He quickly sat up, his eyes catching the form of a fox across the way. This, however, was no ordinary fox; it was a large beast, its body consisting of red and black fur and glistening with gems across its long neck. On its brow sat a golden circlet, one that seemed frighteningly familiar to Link. It was not until after he caught the triforce symbol with the top triangle glowing on its right paw that the fear started to set in.
The fox bared its fangs at Link, an unnatural cackle escaping from its throat. It circled him offensively, preparing for another strike. Link looked frantically across the ground for a weapon, uneasiness showing through in his movements. The fox charged.
Link sat on the ground in complete surprise. Just as the fox was about to pounce Link, a she-wolf had appeared from what seemed like nowhere and ambushed the fox. The two beasts growled viciously at one another, clawing and snapping in combat, the features of their faces scrunched into a combination of rage and fangs. Fur and blood flew all across the clearing until the fox yelped in defeat and limped off into the forest.
Link gripped tightly to his shoulder, the pain finally setting in. He removed his hand a moment later only to see it stained red with his own blood. He sighed, looking up to stand and seeing the she-wolf still standing there. He froze, not out of fear but amazement, when she stepped closer to him. There was something almost human about those blue eyes, the elegant features of her face, and the soft steps of her footing. She stopped right in front of Link, sitting down and gazing at him reassuringly. I mean you no harm, her eyes seemed to tell him.
Link felt at ease next to the wolf. He slowly lifted a hand, stroking her cheek. To his amazement, she nuzzled her face against his palm just like any other domesticated dog. Another smile trailed over his face. He started to admire the beauty of her grey and white fur, her lean fluffy body, the gentleness of her nature; it was during this time that he noticed her unnatural qualities as well. He noticed that her ears were pierced and that her paws had been chained. On her right paw as well was the triforce symbol with the lower right triangle glowing.
"You're a bearer of the Triforce too?" he asked her.
She bowed her head in response. Link became even more puzzled and amazed by this she-wolf, wanting to know more. Her ears perked up at just that moment, her head turning off to one side. Her eyes focused on Link once more, then she jumped to her feet and ran into the thick forest.
"Hey, wait!" Link called back. He tried to stand, but he felt his head grow light and the forest starting to blur before his eyes. After that, it all went black.
